Unity Over Long Island (Full Article)
A vision a fellow Christian shared with me about forty years ago has become clearer and more real to me over the years in bringing to light the profound effects of becoming one by the Spirit of God.
My friend was in his car driving east on the Expressway on Long Island at sunrise, when he saw many different streams flowing in the sky, each having its own distinct wispy color or hue. At first they were all meandering in different directions, and as he watched they suddenly all began to flow in the same direction, yet still separate from one another. As he continued to watch, the different colored streams started to merge and flow together as one single river. What was amazing is, as they began to flow into one, the river became a pure brilliant white and then into the glory of the gold sunrise as it continued to flow. We are the streams that make up that river which will become the City of God, His dwelling:
Ps. 46:4 There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, The holy dwelling places of the Most High.
Interpretation of the Vision
Interpretations of all mysteries (visions, dreams, trances, etc.) belong to God as given by the Holy Spirit. I believe the distinct multi- colored streams represent the Churches we have today. They are seen transitioning to their ultimate destiny of becoming one and then going on to reveal Christ and His glory here on earth before He comes.
It also seemed apparent that the separation of the streams at the beginning of the vision were a result of the man-made prisms of doctrines, traditions, theologies, labels, etc. that were set in place through the centuries. The world no longer saw the one Church representing the pure light of Christ, but many Churches bearing their own individual attraction and identity. The uniqueness of color was of God's design, but the separation I believe was of mans. The following scripture is a reflection of this picture and is further amplified by the “manifold grace of God” where the word “manifold” can be translated as “variation of color or hues”:
1Pet. 4:10 As each one has received a special gift, employ it in serving one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.
What a wonder, I thought at the time; all we had to do is flow together as one and not even change color. In fact if one stream changed color as they flowed together, the single river would no longer be pure white*. I realized then, as I do even more today, that this oneness can only be accomplished through the centrality of Christ as Lord of His Church.
*Science teaches that white light is made up of all the spectrum of colors and can be separated by putting it through a prism. If you remove any color of the spectrum, the light is no longer pure white.
Organic Fingerprint Identification of Each Stream
The streams are not man made, but each individual hue is a unique organic expression of the entities of Christ. This uniqueness is not only a matter of vision or difference in emphasis, but is an expression that comes from the organic nature of each stream. I firmly believe it is defined by the different gifting’s, callings and expression of Christ in the people (1Cor. 12: 4-11) He places in it to fulfill His plan and purpose on the earth for that stream. The people that the Holy Spirit places in each stream make up the DNA of that stream as they contribute the life they have of Christ, unless they are just a piece of driftwood floating by of which there are many. The elements of each stream exist to function in a natural living relationship and are largely responsible for its identity and makeup by the Holy Spirit. They are not formed out of man's ideas or structured organization. An “organic living expression” in the Church is the difference between the functioning of the living body of Christ and a “bionic man” that has had electro/mechanical parts replaced for damaged limbs or organs in the Church. Science fiction is a fitting description compared to the heavenly reality of the expression of Christ’s nature and the power of God.
To illustrate this, let me draw from the analogy of how a salmon is able to find its way back to the very pool in a particular stream it was born in when it returns to spawn. It has been found that each stream, right down to each pool in the stream, has its own “organic fingerprint”. The “fingerprint” is made up of the product and essence of organic life (minerals, plants, etc.) in the stream, right down to the individual pool; and it is a scientific belief that is how each salmon can find the exact pool it was born in.
The Paradox In Unity
Unity will come through a free flow of organic diversification by the power of the Holy Spirit. You cannot have the complete expression of Christ as a whole unless you first have the emerging and the distinctions of the various individual true living expressions.
The scriptures identify the Church, the Body of Christ (1Cor. 12: 12-27) as a living organism made up of body parts connected and functioning together and not an organization or a group of organizations at large. I believe it is becoming evident that as God continues to restore truth and vision to His Church, so will He restore “organicism”, while the “organization” aspects of it will become less predominant and more transparent. I believe that this transparency is the only process that will reveal the impurities in the Body of Christ to ready a bride without spot, wrinkle or blemish: 1 John 1:7 but if we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin.
This cleansing, although it comes from the Atonement is through the life of Christ we exchange with one another as we walk in true fellowship. The scriptures say, the sum of the Word is truth and only the streams of God merged together will reveal a greater revelation of Himself to the Church and to the world.
The restoration is to be built on relationships that are interwoven in a harmonious way that will not only sustain the life of Christ, but also reproduce it. It should be demonstrating to the world “look how we love one another”. The “structure” is not the issue. It is a “heart” and “control” issue. A “family” in the Kingdom should function quite different than a corporation in the world. Otherwise we will produce slaves and workers, instead of sons and daughters.
The Prophetic Breath of God
What has caused these Streams to begin to suddenly change course in the same general direction? It is the same supernatural God that moved on the Prophet Ezekiel to prophesy (Ezek 37: 1-14) to awaken Israel’s dry condition and to breathe His life into them once again. The Prophetic breath of God has begun to move the Streams in the same direction through the restoration of not only the prophetic ministry, but also a prophetic people with prophetic vision. The Lord Jesus Himself has been breathing His prophetic nature into His Church to provide this steerage, and to remove the manmade prisms that have caused us to be divided, and to restore the centrality of Christ as Lord to reign in our midst across all the many streams, to the glory of our Heavenly Father.
The Heavenly Dew of Hermon
It is Heavenly dew that is falling which is causing this move toward unity. This is the hour when both the earthly and Heavenly conditions are right. The dew of God’s grace that is beginning to fall will continue to increase until it is complete and accomplishes its purpose. What is impossible for man is possible with God.
Psa. 133:1 - Behold, how good and how pleasant it is For brothers to dwell together in unity!
Psa. 133:2 - It is like the precious oil upon the head, Coming down upon the beard, Even Aaron’s beard, Coming down upon the edge of his robes.
Psa. 133:3 - It is like the dew of Hermon, Coming down upon the mountains of Zion; For there the LORD commanded the blessing — life forever.
This heavenly visitation is “…like dew from the Lord, like showers on vegetation which do not wait for, or delay for the sons of men.” (Micah 5:7) I had seen a poster about the time this vision was given depicting blades of grass heavy laden with large drops of dew with a caption on the bottom that said, “Bend or Break”. As I stood before it pondering it I believe what He is saying to His Church regarding this sovereign move of the Holy Spirit concerning unity is this: “Bend or break”. We will not be able to carry the weight of the fullness of His Glory as it comes down upon His Bride. It will take faith and true humility to be joined in unity and it seems this scripture seems to fit the picture:
Rom. 11:20 Quite right, they were broken off for their unbelief, but you stand by your faith. Do not be conceited, but fear;
The Apostolic Move of God
What is going to be able to gently father these individual streams to become a single River? It will be a true apostolic move of God through the apostles and prophets working together to begin the merging of the streams into one river where only Christ will be seen and their uniqueness transparent, but very vibrant. These will be called and anointed men and women who can see beyond church organizations and recognize that an organic living entity rather than its separate independent components constitutes life and a living *synergism; and at the same time hold the essence of the uniqueness of the individual parts sacred. I see others besides apostles in the full sense of the word, that the Lord will send to take part as “midwives” to aid in this birthing process. They will hold no other apostolic sway over the churches other than for this function.
*A “synergism” occurs as this process is being completed, where you have the sum of the individual parts functioning together are far greater then the individual parts functioning separately.
While God is in the process of moving the Church in this direction in final alignment of His purposes, there is a restoration and regeneration process that is occurring in the Body of Christ for this to take place. It is also a very important phenomenon to understand if we are to fully embrace and take part in this progression. God is getting us ready to reveal more of His Kingdom, both in the unfolding of His truth and in defining the many streams. At the same time He is defining, He is neutralizing the man made differences and removing them, so that the only definition that will be seen ultimately by the world will be His Son Jesus.
The Alaskan River Experience
A number of years ago while I was in Alaska I experienced the merging of two small rivers, as my wife and I made our way down one of the waterways in a river paddleboat. The rivers were two very different colors, one was a deep grayish green/blue because it was directly glacier fed and the other looked like your average blue river. One thing I remember, it was not easy to navigate even for our experienced captain because turbulence and the river bottom and currents were always changing where the two merged together. I also recall the captain saying it was at that point the river was teeming with wildlife. Upon passing through the turbulence and proceeding down the river, I noticed the now larger river became a completely different color then either of the actuaries that formed it. I sensed the Lord saying to me with a word of excitement, as I looked back where the two streams had joined, “it is not going to be easy, but it is going to be worth it”.
I still believe to this day it is a worthwhile life’s ambition to passionately pursue because it is the heart of our Heavenly Father and our ultimate destiny as well. Perhaps I will see you in one of the streams; if not, by the grace of God, eventually in the river where we can enjoy His “Commanded Blessing” together. A Blessing we will not have to ask for because He will just “Command” it because of our love for one another. I am reminded by this vision that the sun is rising on Gods Church and not setting:
